A milestone!

Finally, after a long and difficult process, Con Pazion has reached a MILESTONE! 🥂🎉 We are proud and honored to announce that we have recently signed a revolutionary agreement with the Peruvian government (MINEDU) to 'have' and manage the first holistic PUBLIC school of Peru! 🎉 We are immensely honored and grateful for this opportunity.

A historical happening

Never before in Peruvian history has a non-traditional school been accepted in the public-school system of Peru. There were even legislative changes necessary to make this possible. The agreement that we signed is revolutionary and a big opportunity to offer quality holistic education to disadvantaged children and give them the chance to reach their full potential and break the cycle of poverty.

The school in Manchay with 680 students is officially ‘ours’ now. It’s Con Pazion’s first school. But our goal is that many more Con Pazion schools will follow throughout all Peru in the future. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to access holistic quality education for free.

We are immensely grateful and honored for this unique opportunity, for the support and acceptance of MINEDU, for their trust, their dedication and their unconditional support during this challenging process.

2021

Now that the agreement is signed, we can start creating and implementing our holistic curriculum little by little. Unfortunately, COVID is spreading faster than ever at this moment in Peru and the school is still closed until further notice.

Our students are in contact with their teachers through WhatsApp and follow special classes on tv or radio that the government has developed: Aprendo en casa. (I learn at home)

It’s not ideal because not all our students have access to electricity or phone signal, but at this moment there is no other option. Hopefully things will get better at the end of the year. Until then we try to visit our students at their homes frequently.

Con Pazion is currently focusing on fundraising, coaching and working with the teachers and students in a virtual way, creating our holistic curriculum as well as improving the infrastructure of the school in order to have it ready for when the school is able to open again.

Although the contract has been signed with the Ministry of Education, it still means that Con Pazion is responsible (also financially) for all the improvements and innovations that we are going to implement. We cannot do this alone. You can support us to improve the quality of the school and give the children better future opportunities.

Reflecting on 2019 and looking ahead to our future

2019 has been more than we could have ever wished for. It was filled with growth, challenges, partnerships, and dreams coming true. Bringing smiles to children’s’ faces and tears of happiness to our own eyes, we realize: this year has been nothing short of magic! THANK YOU for your support.

As this year comes to an end, we are reflecting on all of the milestones we have passed and all of the mountains we have surmounted. Con Pazion has grown tremendously in the minds, hearts, and spirits of community members in Peru and around the world. We have been active in 3 places in Manchay, Lima, and have approximately 600 underprivileged children, their parents, and community members attend weekly holistic workshops in dance, mindfulness, yoga, gardening, environmental education, English, sports, and art. The children have experienced what it means to have a healthy mind, body, and spirit and how to cultivate healthy lifelong habits. We have seen the children grow and thrive, and through them, our own hearts grew tremendously.

Through our community partnerships, we are no longer standing alone. We are thrilled to be holding hands with Lima Yoga, Colegio Villa Per Se, Adidas, Unilever, ANIA, and Ecoladrillos:

• Villa Per Se, our sister school, is supporting us in adapting a holistic curriculum.

• Adidas helped us construct a sports field in our secondary school.

• With Unilever and ANIA, we collaborated to create a TiNi (Tierra de niños), a green classroom.

• The women of Ecoladrillos have become close and heartwarming partners. Our two organizations stand TOGETHER fighting for equality and a better world.

• Ecoladrillos and Protecta Security created colorful benches and planters constructed from over 1800 eco bricks filled with 500 kilos of plastic waste!

• Local artists transformed the walls of our school with mind blowing color and inspiration, painting murals alongside our school students to transform the secondary area into a beautiful oasis in the desert of Manchay.

• The Lima Yoga community has supported us throughout the year, through fundraising yoga classes and growing our community. In partnership with Lima Yoga, we ended the year with a marvelous Christmas celebration at our school. Over 400 children participated in the gratitude ceremony, a yoga class guided by 40 Lima Yoga teachers and Con Pazion volunteers and a chocolatada. It was a magical experience!

Our work could not have been possible without our growing team of strong, resilient, and dedicated volunteers from the USA, The Netherlands, Peru, France, Chile, UK, Germany, Spain, and Australia.

Looking ahead

With the new year coming just around the corner, we have even bigger dreams in our minds and hearts. Our long-term and ultimate goal is to make free, quality education accessible for every child in Peru. The school in Manchay is our pilot project, which will serve as an example for more Con Pazion schools in the future. All schools will serve underprivileged children with holistic education for free. Fighting toward educational equity, underprivileged children will get the chance to reach their full potential and break the cycle of poverty.
 
Working toward our ultimate goal, we have set sub goals for 2020. First and foremost, our goals include:

• Training the 20 teachers at our school in holistic education

• Integrating our holistic methodology into our school

• Transforming the kindergarten and primary school into a haven where we educate whole children: their hands, hearts, and heads.

We strive for a holistic and innovative approach where we are connecting subjects, cultivating awareness, creating critical thinking minds, and fostering an environment of collaboration instead of competition. We hope to emphasize learning by doing and providing hands-on projects and opportunities. In 2020, our overall goal is that:

• Our 350 kindergarten and primary students receive daily quality holistic education for free

• We impact 650 students in finding their own individualized truth and pathways for education through our school and workshops

• 600 parents and community members will receive holistic workshops and will be active in our school community to help and support our children.

We will improve the infrastructure of our school in Manchay. In 2020, we hope to create a water system to provide clean water to children, to construct a comedor where the children consume complete and healthy meals, and to construct a yoga and arts shala so children will have a space to express themselves and grow and share their creativity with our school community. We would like to expand the garden to engage children with the environment around them.

We have big goals and even bigger dreams, and we want to make them a reality. We have come this far with your support, so we would like to extend a big THANK YOU!

Es totalmente diferente aquí. Me sorprendió bastante al principio. La pobreza, la desnutrición, los problemas de salud, los problemas de salud mental. Ofrecemos clases de yoga en el patio de juegos polvoriento. Nuestro objetivo es comenzar nuestra propia escuela primaria el próximo año. No sólo en Perú sino también en todo el mundo, integrando yoga en el plan de estudios escolar, y atención plena. Pueden llegar a ser seres humanos más felices y sanos. Deseamos que todos puedan ser libres y felices.

 La Escuela Primaria Con Pazion

Con Pazion está abriendo su primera Escuela Primaria Holística para niños menos privilegiados en los barrios pobres de Lima, Perú. Hemos creado un concepto educativo revolucionario mediante el cual empoderamos a los niños desde adentro para que puedan obtener movilidad social y civil, y puedan romper el ciclo de la pobreza. Con Pazion crea una mejora sostenible para los estudiantes en el comportamiento y el estilo de vida mediante la integración de yoga, atención plena, y la salud y la conciencia ambiental en el plan de estudios básico. Nuestro objetivo es brindar la oportunidad de acceder a una educación de calidad, personal y holística para los niños que viven en extrema pobreza.

La Escuela Con Pazion apoya a los niños para que tomen conciencia de su propia fuerza y del mundo en el que viven, para que así se vuelvan autoconscientes y seguros de sí mismos. Al darles la oportunidad de descubrir y decidir lo que es importante y significativo para ellos, para los demás, para la sociedad y para el mundo en el que viven, podremos crear un cambio duradero. Trabajamos con lo que ya existe: el corazón de un niño, su fuerza, las familias, la comunidad, la naturaleza y el mundo. Manchay

Manchay es una periferia de Lima, Perú. En Manchay, la situación en la mayoría de las escuelas es conmovedora. En Manchay, aproximadamente el 50% vive en pobreza extrema. Muchas casas tienen un ingreso inferior a $ 20 por mes y solo el 10% de la población tiene un ingreso regular. La tasa de desempleo es alta, lo que resulta en un aumento de la delincuencia juvenil y la formación de pandillas. Los niños de Manchay están atrasados en su desarrollo. Están muy por detrás en temas esenciales, como escritura, lectura y matemáticas. La falta de capacidades de los docentes, su educación, sus habilidades pedagógicas, combinadas con la gran cantidad de niños por aula, las estructuras de construcción y la falta de estímulo por parte de los padres causan problemas graves. En Manchay, las personas viven el día a día, luchando por sobrevivir. No hay visión ni esperanza a largo plazo.

¿Qué es la educación holística?

El enfoque holístico de Con Pazion gira en torno a la salud, las habilidades para la vida y los valores. Este enfoque nutre un sentido de maravillarse e invita a los estudiantes a explorar el mundo. La cooperación es la norma, en lugar de la competencia y las recompensas de ayudarse mutuamente. Se enfatizar el crecer y tener éxito en lugar de clasificar a los estudiantes. Nos enfocamos en la enseñanza de habilidades prácticas a través del yoga, meditación, jardinería ecológica y educación ambiental. Estas enseñanzas aumentan la confianza de los niños en sí mismos y alimenta su autoestima, lo que les ayuda a manifestar lo mejor de sí mismos. Esto, a su vez, tiene un efecto positivo en sus vidas y en quienes los rodean.  

La construcción de un edificio sustentable.

Con Pazion construirá un edificio sustentable que se ajuste a nuestra visión y nuestras necesidades. Para eso vamos a crear un edificio de larga duración, en su mayoría hecho de materiales reciclados y naturales. (Vea la galería para tener una impresión de nuestros diseños). Nuestra meta es que el edificio se ajuste al entorno y deje la menor huella posible. Los diseños son una indicación de la construcción escolar final. Necesita algunos ajustes ya que la escuela se construirá en una colina. Nuestra meta es abrir la escuela en Marzo del 2019,  empezando con dos grados y luego crece a medida que los niños progresan. Agregaremos un grado adicional (incluída la Infraestructura) cada año hasta que se complete una escuela con los grados primero hasta el sexto.

Principios y Valores Pedagógicos

1) RESPETO: Enseñamos a los niños a respetarse a sí mismos, así como a los demás, la naturaleza, los animales y el entorno con amor, compasión, dignidad, gratitud y cuidado.

2) TOLERANCIA: Los niños aprenderán a valorarse a sí mismos, a apreciarse a sí mismos y a reconocerse como personas con derechos y deberes, pero también deben respetar a los demás, ser tolerantes con la diversidad, con aquellos que son diferentes y no comparten las mismas creencias, lenguaje, pensamientos políticos o religiosos.

3) INTEGRIDAD: Enseñamos la importancia de ser honestos y leales tanto en su palabra como en sus acciones. Les enseñamos a actuar desde la motivación interna, desde su corazón y, por lo tanto, a vivir con paz y pasión.

4) UNIDAD: Los estudiantes aprenderán y dominarán valores humanitarios como la paz y la compasión. A través de nuestro enfoque holístico promovemos la unidad, la idea de que todo está conectado. Les enseñamos a los niños que cada uno de ellos es parte de algo más grande que ellos mismos, como su escuela, su comunidad, su familia, la naturaleza, el mundo. Les enseñamos habilidades de comunicación que les permiten ver a los demás como "el otro yo". Aprenderán responsabilidades sociales, empatía y tolerancia, y les enseñaremos a identificar la influencia social.

5) RESPONSABILIDAD: Enseñamos a los niños a reflexionar sobre ellos mismos y sus acciones, les enseñamos a asumir la responsabilidad de que están a cargo de sus propias vidas, sus oportunidades, su comportamiento y su propia felicidad. Motivamos sus habilidades de pensamiento crítico y reflexión y les hacemos conscientes de su lugar en la sociedad y sus responsabilidades para convertirse en las mejores versiones de sí mismos.

6) SEGURIDAD: Con Pazion creará un lugar donde los niños se sientan seguros y puedan prosperar. Un lugar donde los niños se sientan en paz, en casa, se sientan seguros y libres. Creamos un espacio en el que los niños pueden florecer y prosperar. La cooperación es nuestra norma, en lugar de la competencia. El énfasis está en ayudarse mutuamente y crecer juntos como la recompensa en lugar de ser categorizados y colocados uno encima del otro.

 La Escuela Primaria Con Pazion se utilizará para ayudar a los niños a florecer y crecer desde una edad temprana en todos los aspectos de sus vidas. Tu apoyo para este proyecto de construcción le dará a Con Pazion un hogar para seguir creciendo y alcanzar a más niños con nuestro enfoque único y revolucionario.

Riesgos y desafios

Estamos encantados de estar alcanzando nuestra meta y abrir la escuela primaria Con Pazion en Marzo del 2019.

Algunos de nuestros riesgos y desafíos incluyen:

1) Licencia de la escuela: Con Pazion ha completado el proceso de documentación de la escuela a través del Ministerio de Educación y una colaboración conmovedora para establecer un plan de estudios integral con visión. Ahora, estamos anticipando la licencia oficial para hacer de Con Pazion un establecimiento con licencia. 

2) Construir la escuela: Nuestro mayor obstáculo es completar esta parte del proyecto, dado nuestro presupuesto y limitaciones de tiempo. ¡Nuestros esfuerzos de recaudación de fondos ayudarán a crear una escuela estimulante, hermosa y sustentable para nuestros niños! Su compromiso contribuirá con el paisajismo, la construcción de las aulas, las cercas, el patio de recreo y el área de escenario al aire libre para yoga y arte. Nos hemos preparado para los desafíos futuros creando alianzas positivas con el Gobierno, el Ministerio de Educación y organizaciones globales.

 3) Instalaciones escolares: Nuestra misión es brindar a los niños educación de calidad y oportunidades únicas para sumergirse en el juego exploratorio, el yoga, el arte y el aprendizaje. Creando un entorno interno equilibrado que refleje nuestra visión y sea propicio para nuestro plan de estudios se enfrentará a desafíos financieros. ¡Estamos preparados y hemos creado muchas colaboraciones positivas y una gran red mundial! Creemos en encontrar soluciones creativas para todos los contratiempos y nuestra capacidad para ser ingeniosos y prácticos en el presupuesto para las necesidades de nuestro programa.

 4) Talleres para padres y la comunidad: Para crear un mayor impacto, incorporamos a los padres y miembros de la comunidad para organizar talleres para que toda la comunidad pueda beneficiarse de Con Pazion.

 Nuestras actividades de yoga para niños han llenado el corazón de muchos niños en nuestra comunidad con autoconciencia, autocuidado y amor. La visión de criar niños en nuestra comunidad con estas habilidades esenciales para la vida está en el corazón de nuestro programa de aprendizaje socio-emocional. Junto con una educación de calidad, los niños tendrán la oportunidad de alcanzar su máximo potencial y romper el ciclo de la pobreza.

Luisa's story: The impact of volunteering in Manchay

Passion

I left my heart in Manchay. At the end of January of this year I found out about Leonie and Con Pazion from a post of Yoga With Adriene whom I follow in the networks. And simply in order to see what happened, I decided to write to her and see if I could help with anything on the weekends, since I was working during the week. That is how we got together and she proposed to accompany her on Sunday to Manchay, a slum on the outskirts of Lima. The chapter that followed in my life will always be one of the most beautiful. I will always be grateful to Leonie van Iersel and Con Pazion for giving me the opportunity to share my passion with these children for a whole summer.

the experience

It is definitely very different from teaching yoga in a studio to people who luckily have all the comforts needed to live quietly. Despite the difficulties in their lives, these children taught me that it is way better to spend a Sunday sharing your passion, than lying on the beach looking for a tan and that happiness is definitely not found in material things but in experiences. I would have liked to continue supporting Con Pazion but life called me to go to other directions. 

Happiness

However, in the short time I was with the children of Manchay, I could see great changes in each one of them. See them running towards us as soon as we got off the bus, hear them asking us to sing together "Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu" and even proposing to spend beach days in the river ... THIS IS HAPPINESS !! Your heart grows so much so much ... And how nice it was to feel that affection from the first day! You are a complete stranger to these children, but the moment you decide to dedicate a few hours of your day, the reward simply can not be described with words. Beautiful energy everywhere.
